I enjoy hiking alone as I can go at my own speed and stop and enjoy nature at my leisure. Plan ahead and order a map from the website to see the trails. I like Roaring Brook but so does most others so it books up fast. The bunk shared house could be an option if you want to overnight in the park but not need a tent.

Plan ahead as you'll need to book a parking spot for day hiking in the park if you don't have a camp site booked. If you don't want to hike up Katahdin there are lots of beautiful lakes and streams in the park and a lot have canoes for rent.

If nature and solidarity are your hopes then go and enjoy. Again look on Kahtadins website as there's rules people sometimes overlook and get turned away like no dogs and vehicles size limits. Another tip if money's not super tight is to book a night or two at the Katahdin lake wilderness camps. You book through the wilderness camps and park in Baxter going towards Roaring Brook, Avalanche parking area, and hike about 3 miles into Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps or you can charter a float plane.

You won't be able to hike Katahdin from there but the views of the mountain from the lake are breathtaking. The food is delicious so if you can afford it get the full plan. Beds are made so you don't have to carry in sleeping bags or tents making your hiking easier.

As for the other reviews about the tote road being poorly maintained, I did not find this to be the case at all. The road is very well maintained, easy to drive. Yes it can be narrow at times but we had no problem meeting cars. The park is very clean and the toilets are well kept and located everywhere so don't be worried about finding a place to go. We found the park rangers to be most helpful and very friendly. They gave us tips and pointers on moose sightings and swimming holes.

We arrived at the park at 8 am and after speaking with the ranger at the information center we headed straight for Sandy Stream Pond in hopes for a moose sighting. Once you check in with the ranger at the park gate it is an 8 mile drive to the parking lot and then a half mile hike in.

And well worth it!!!! We were the only ones in on the trail and as we entered the lookout point there was a moose in the water. And even if you do not have the luck of seeing one, the views are amazing. The hike is easy and my kids had a blast finding all the animal tracks along the way. Our next stop was to go to Stump Pond as that has been the hang out lately of a large bull moose. Although we didn't have the luck of seeing him again We traveled on to Ledge Falls so my daughters could try out the natural water slides.

The water was low and a bit cold so they settled for dipping their feet in. Vehicles with Maine plates get in for free. Living in Maine and having this beautiful, pristine place to visit is just amazing and we are so blessed!!

Baxter State Park has the most primitive and endless woods I've ever seen, the trails through the thickness of the trees, the ponds, the silence are just too hard to discribe. For the first time I understood Thoreau. It's a wonderful place to walk, forget all your troubles, enjoy nature and look for the local fauna, from moose to dragonflies. Also there is no cell phone coverage, it is perfect to disconnect. The worst: mosquitoes, you'll need a lot of bug spray and above tree line Kathadin it gets much worse.

Although it takes a little time to get there this place is gorgeous. The ranger was very helpful in guiding us on appropriate trails based on our hiking skills. The hike on the AT to big and little Niagara Falls was perfect. A little challenging at the beginning and end for novice hikers but easy in the middle. Nice places to stop and enjoy the scenery and take a break.
