Are you kidding? No dogs allowed! We have traveled all over the US to numerous state parks including Yellow Stone and have never heard of such. A lot of people travel with dogs. I guess we will choose to spend our money in other states. This will hurt your locals who depend on tourist money.

Irina k 1 contribution. Rough road. Never ever go to Baxter State Park Main if you don't want to loose your car. If you go from Togue Pond Gate by Park Tote road is so bad that driving first two miles like riding roller-coaster. Car is so shaking like it is going to fall apart into pieces.

And I am afraid that it is not over. Rachel Rockaway, NJ 3 contributions. Beautiful Park. We visited the north entrance and was able to drive 9 miles inside the park. The rest of the loop road was not open due to the road condition. The park is well maintained with lots of beautiful scenery. But the bugs mostly black flies were really annoying. Bug repellent was not enough to keep it away.

I finally bought a hat net to keep it away from my face. We got a much better view of Katahdin Mountain on our way to the south entrance. Since the loop road is closed. But the lake behind the information center is very pretty.

A little piece of the AT. For the last part of our Maine experience, we wanted to head north from the coast for some hiking in this famous state park. Hiking abounds, lots of choices, great picnic lunch spots.

Covid restrictions in place with parking in certain locations limited, but we were able to get to an area and hike in without any problems. Unspoiled wilderness state park. Arrived here after a 6 hour drive, entered Baxter Park via the South Entrance. Hiked to Abol Falls which was a beautiful yet easily accessible trail, only slightly tricky part was fording a small stream but there were enough rocks and trekking poles we brought helped maintain balance.

On our way out of the park we stopped at a pond and saw a beaver, looked for moose but none were out at this time. This is a beautiful unspoiled wilderness that we look forward to exploring more! The dirt road in was smooth and well maintained. Rugged beauty. What a beautiful place! Rugged and harsh yet inviting. Maine is just different. Follow the rules; print out the parking pass, leave your dog at home, drive slowly on the roads, pack out your trash.

Spend money in millinocket when you drive through, the town and its people have been devastated with the closing of the plant. Jeff S Middletown, OH contributions. You will see a lot of forest. It was okay but for the in my opinion the drive there was better than the park. What I saw mostly in the park was forest all the way up against both sides of the road.

It's great to experience the wild, but I always assumed a bunch of trees clustered together looked like this. Not many pull offs with great views after around 12 miles of driving.

Lots of hikes if you are interested in that. We took one hike bak to a couple of waterfalls, Park staff was excellent and friendly. TMc47 Dexter, MI 3 contributions. Is it true you should not take a truck down Golden Rd as I read in a review? A truck will be our only mode of transportation while on this trip and we'd really like to visit BSP. If we visit on a Monday in late-mid October, will we still have to fight for a parking space? Thanks for any info.

Add a reply. Judeen G. There is a lodge with rooms as well as separate cabins for rent, but they rent out far in advance. There are hotels in the Millinocket area, which is fairly close to the park.

And, if you're adventurous, you can tent out in numerous places throughout the park. Read all replies. Brenda M Greenville, SC 16 contributions. Is the Blair Hill Inn worthy of the rates it asks for a room?

The boat ride to see Mt. Kahtadin sounds nice but we wouldn't want to be doing a lot of heavy hiking etc. Linda D Portland, ME 2, contributions. I am not familiar with that Inn.

If you are only going to be there for one day maybe just explore the Moosehead area. There is not much near Baxter State Park besides exploring the park. Is there a fly fishing guide service in the area? Would love to surprise my husband. We will be visiting the last week in July. Thanks for any direction you can give! Sorry I do not know. I am not a fisherman but you could probably google fly fishing in Baxter State Park and find out.

Sara C 1 contribution. BostonBoston Lowell, MA 49 contributions. As a woman I've camped there several times alone and summited the top alone. I enjoy hiking alone as I can go at my own speed and stop and enjoy nature at my leisure. Plan ahead and order a map from the website to see the trails. I like Roaring Brook but so does most others so it books up fast. The bunk shared house could be an option if you want to overnight in the park but not need a tent.

Plan ahead as you'll need to book a parking spot for day hiking in the park if you don't have a camp site booked. If you don't want to hike up Katahdin there are lots of beautiful lakes and streams in the park and a lot have canoes for rent.

If nature and solidarity are your hopes then go and enjoy. Again look on Kahtadins website as there's rules people sometimes overlook and get turned away like no dogs and vehicles size limits. Another tip if money's not super tight is to book a night or two at the Katahdin lake wilderness camps. You book through the wilderness camps and park in Baxter going towards Roaring Brook, Avalanche parking area, and hike about 3 miles into Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps or you can charter a float plane.

You won't be able to hike Katahdin from there but the views of the mountain from the lake are breathtaking. The food is delicious so if you can afford it get the full plan. Beds are made so you don't have to carry in sleeping bags or tents making your hiking easier.

Hope F Howell, NJ 40 contributions. Is it worth going into the park if we can't do any hikes My mom can walk, but definitely not do anything remotely strenuous. The drive through the park in the summer time would be awesome. There is a lot to take in and some sites you can drive close to and only a short walk. My wife has a bad hip and she was able to make short hikes. ShelbyB Maine 4 contributions. I was curious if you have snowmobiled the Baxter State Park Road at all? It is a wilderness camping experience and that is what makes it so unique.

It will likely be the same in years thanks to Percival Baxter. It is not for everyone no pets, no motorized crafts, no RVs. But if it is for you, you will love it. So many trails and leantos and beautiful isolated spots. And I haven't even talked about katahdin and the knife's edge. My favorite place is Baxter state park. I visited BSP yesterday with my girls and it was absolutely amazing.

As for the other reviews about the tote road being poorly maintained, I did not find this to be the case at all. The road is very well maintained, easy to drive. Yes it can be narrow at times but we had no problem meeting cars. The park is very clean and the toilets are well kept and located everywhere so don't be worried about finding a place to go. We found the park rangers to be most helpful and very friendly. They gave us tips and pointers on moose sightings and swimming holes.

We arrived at the park at 8 am and after speaking with the ranger at the information center we headed straight for Sandy Stream Pond in hopes for a moose sighting. Once you check in with the ranger at the park gate it is an 8 mile drive to the parking lot and then a half mile hike in.

And well worth it!!!! We were the only ones in on the trail and as we entered the lookout point there was a moose in the water. And even if you do not have the luck of seeing one, the views are amazing. The hike is easy and my kids had a blast finding all the animal tracks along the way. Our next stop was to go to Stump Pond as that has been the hang out lately of a large bull moose. Although we didn't have the luck of seeing him again We traveled on to Ledge Falls so my daughters could try out the natural water slides.

The water was low and a bit cold so they settled for dipping their feet in. Vehicles with Maine plates get in for free. Living in Maine and having this beautiful, pristine place to visit is just amazing and we are so blessed!!

Baxter State Park has the most primitive and endless woods I've ever seen, the trails through the thickness of the trees, the ponds, the silence are just too hard to discribe. For the first time I understood Thoreau. It's a wonderful place to walk, forget all your troubles, enjoy nature and look for the local fauna, from moose to dragonflies. Also there is no cell phone coverage, it is perfect to disconnect. The worst: mosquitoes, you'll need a lot of bug spray and above tree line Kathadin it gets much worse.

Although it takes a little time to get there this place is gorgeous. The ranger was very helpful in guiding us on appropriate trails based on our hiking skills. The hike on the AT to big and little Niagara Falls was perfect. A little challenging at the beginning and end for novice hikers but easy in the middle. Nice places to stop and enjoy the scenery and take a break.

The hike around Kidney Pond was beautiful but very rocky and requires 3 points on the ground at many places. We cut that one a little short. Can't wait to return and try new trails but as others have said.. Skip to main content. Sign in to get trip updates and message other travelers.
