I know I never had any issues like this using XP Pro or Home SP 1, 2, or 3. System Specs:Make/Model: Dell Studio 1737CPU Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 @ 2.26ghzRAM: 4 gb DDR2Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (256 mb)OS: 64 bit Vista Premium SP1 I bought this laptop However, my machine sat like this for about 5 to 10 minutes, much longer than any restart I've ever preformed (including earlier update restarts on this specific machine). The moment you intend to access the information stored in these bad sectors, the system will hang.

Also, try to replace the memory chips and see if that works. So I corrected the errors and then defragged the registry for good measure. Brand new HP laptop with Vista. Try changing it to AHCI or ATA and see if either work for you.

Then you check half of those and restart again. I had an issue very similar to what is being discussed however, instead of a black screen I got a BSOD after a Windows update. Try to uninstall it now in Control Panel and then use the MacAfee Removal Tool from its website found by Googling to get the leftovers because it is like a bad Check This Out This didn't solve my problem, but may help you.

This should solve many peoples problems I think. Just to explain my logic here - If Vista stops working AFTER a reinstall, and XP works ok, this rules out possible How many Gigs of free space do you have? If you follow the steps mentioned above thoroughly, you will be able to fix this problem.
