I tried Kubuntu 9.10 from the CD and it had similar problems. I hooked the monitor up to the built-in motherboard graphics chip, and the screen came up and told me to install the drivers, new hardware found...yadda yadda. Aero does not work but flash video playback (ie Youtube) in 480 resolutionis possible.
